I have a nine year old daughter with a rare chromosome abnormality who did not speak until age 6. Sign language saved our lives and I would recommend teaching it to anyone who is speech delayed for any reason. It does not mean you are giving up on speech. Sign language will facilitate speech not hinder it!!

Hi,

I do disagree with the comment on not using sign language at all. My experience with my 22 month old son, Dominick (DS), was that sign baby language was a great bridge for him. It taught him the meaning of expressive communication. I also used "My Baby Can Read" which really helped unlock his ability to speak. He now uses signs, words and he is starting to sight read words. This makes him a tripple threat. He is not just learning one language. Speech, sign and reading - those are 3 different ways to communicate. My approach is a multisensory one. By the way did I mention that he has hearing loss in one ear. Anyways, he's doing just great.

My son began with sign. It helped us know what he was thinking about. It facilitated questioning, three word phrases. He could tell us his feelings and request things. He also liked to tell us about his dreams. Speech came later. But at least he was able to converse before speech came. I would recommend sign in addition to what you suggest.

Absolutely fascinating read... I agree and disagree with parts of this. Think I'm probably going to do a follow up post on my boys' speech experience b/c there's too much to say about it in a comment. But, thanks for an absolutely comprehensive view of the components of launguage development..

[Maggie, I hope you do post on this and where you agree and where you disagree. I'd love to see a discussion on how to really achieve language development. -Miriam]
