If you are new to Down Syndrome, or if you are looking for a quick overview of the approach this site takes to Down Syndrome, the articles linked below are the place to start. This page is especially prepared for new parents who are facing an Internet full of “information,” much of it useless. It is my intention to point to articles that give you hope. After reading these articles, you are invited to browse the other articles on this site.
The Top Fifteen Things a New Parent Should KnowThis series was written to the parents of a particular baby boy who has Down syndrome. These are the things I wish I had known from the beginning when my own daughter was born. |
Einstein SyndromeExcerpt: Imagine that you have just given birth. You notice a sense of excitement in the room. Finally, the doctor comes to you with a big smile and says, “I have some important news to give you. Based on our preliminary examination, we believe your baby has Einstein syndrome!” |
Evan, God’s Best GiftExcerpt: And in that instant I became a better person. I fell hard in love with him and didn’t care what was wrong. I felt a compassion I didn’t know I had and I felt a need to do all I could to help him have a wonderful useful life and to make it as easy as I could for him. To quote someone else I heard once, “He touched a place in my heart I didn’t know was there.” |
Should I Keep this Baby?Excerpt: I heard about a pastor who always asks couples in his premarital counseling sessions, “What will you do if you have a baby with Down Syndrome?” Upon hearing the answers their prospective spouse makes, some of the couples break up. Before my marriage nearly 24 years ago my answer probably would have been riddled with uncertainty, doubt, fear, and hope that it would never happen. But now I have an answer. |
An Introduction to TNI in Down SyndromeExcerpt: That extra chromosome isn’t just sitting there in your kid’s body. The DNA on the chromosome is active all the time, and when it isn’t replicating itself it is busy making proteins. The upshot is that your kid has too many of certain chemicals in his body, and this excess causes the physical problems we recognize as Down Syndrome. The mix of stuff in TNI is designed to either rebalance cycles that are out of whack due to too much of these proteins to prevent damage from occurring, or to repair the damage done by cycles out of whack. |
